What role do connections play in Christian education?

Educated people make connections. They connect what they have learned with what’s going on around them. So, I think it’s fair to say that getting educated involves making connections, for example:
  • Letters with words on signs.
  • Math with scientific formulas.
  • Literature with film.
  • History with current events.
  • Beliefs with behavior.

At Christian schools, we want our students connecting:
  • Content/skills from one unit with content/skills from another unit. We want PE students connecting badminton rules and tennis rules.
  • Content/skills from one course with content/skills from another course. We want English 7 students connecting what they are currently learning with what they learned in English 6, and we want 9th graders connecting what they are learning in English, social studies, and Bible.
  • Content/skills and life. We want students connecting ecology with their energy consumption.
  • Content /skills and Biblical principles. We want students connecting wars throughout history with Biblical principles regarding government and the sanctity of life.
  • Biblical principles and life. We want students connecting Biblical principles regarding love with the music they listen to.

Bottom line: At Christian schools, we want students to connect what they study, life, and Biblical principles.

Question: How do you help your students make connections in your class? How are you helping your students connect content/skills from one unit with content/skills from another unit? Content/skills from one course with content/skills from another course? Content/skills and life? Biblical principles and life?

Remember: If we want our students to be educated, we must help them make connections. If we want them to develop a Biblical worldview so they can impact the world for Christ, we must help them connect what they study, life, and Biblical principles.
